About The Study

Researchers at The University of Texas at Austin are conducting the PERPP study to understand how psychotherapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) changes brain function and impacts the ability to experience positive emotions. This research utilizes neuroimaging and evidence-based therapy to study the effects of trauma-focused treatment on reward circuitry.

Seeking adults within this age range living with PTSD.

Who Can Participate
  • Adults ages 18–65
  • Individuals with current, chronic PTSD (symptoms for 3+ months)
  • Primary English speakers
  • Individuals willing and able to undergo MRI scans
  • Those not currently taking regular psychiatric medications (some exceptions apply).
  • Individuals who have not received trauma-focused psychotherapy in the past year.

What To Expect

Clinical interviews and computerized assessments
Two fMRI and two EEG brain scan sessions
12 sessions of Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
Random assignment to either immediate therapy or a 6–8 week waitlist
Regular weekly check-ins and symptom surveys
you will receive 12 sessions of evidence-based psychotherapy for PTSD if you choose to participate in this trial.
