The Project Brain Team Study, led by researchers at Arizona State University, is recruiting families to explore how innovative online games can enhance coping and resilience skills in children aged 9-12. This study is specifically designed for children whose parents are divorced or separated, acknowledging the unique challenges and opportunities these families face.
This project is testing new online games to learn if they help children ages 9-12 feel better when conflict happens after parental separation and divorce. The online games teach children about the brain and how they can learn to work with their "Brain Team" to deal with tough thoughts and feelings!
Eligible families can get up to $300 in e-gift cards and children will also get prizes for doing project activities. Parents and children each get $50 for 1st survey [during Zoom meeting], $50 for 2nd survey [end-of-study survey], and $50 for 3rd survey [follow-up three months later]).
You live in the United States.
Your child is between the ages of 9-12.
You are separated or divorced from their other parent.
Your child is not currently in therapy or counseling.
You spend at least 4 overnights and/or 12 daytime visits per month with the child.
Ensure that your child can complete online games and surveys independently.
The pre-screen step is a brief survey that asks about your children's ages, whether you are separated or divorced from their other parent, and how we can reach out you tell you more about the project. It should take 5 minutes. Based on your answers to the pre-screen, you may be invited to attend a Zoom meeting with a member of our research team. You will not receive an e-gift card for the pre-screen step.
Your child might be eligible if they feel stressed about events during or after the separation or divorce (e.g., hearing parents argue, feeling caught in the middle) and are struggling with their feelings or behavior.
The screen step is a Zoom meeting with you, your child, and a member of our team. To schedule the meeting you will be asked to provide a selfie with valid identification. During the meeting, you will be invited to turn on your camera, verify you have a working phone number, and answer survey questions. It should take about 2 hours. All participants receive $50 for completing the Zoom call.
Eligible participants proceed to this step. If you and your child decide to enroll, you will be asked to respond to surveys about how your child has been doing since the separation/divorce.
Your child will be asked to:
1. Play online games that teach tools to deal with tough thoughts and feelings
2. Answer questions about what they thought of the games and how it's going practicing the new tools learned in the games
3. Talk with a researcher on the phone, do brief daily reports, and do two online surveys about things that have happened since the separation/divorce.
